What Size Bathroom Exhaust Fan Do You Need?

A bathroom exhaust fan should remove humid air before it condenses on walls, ceilings, mirrors, and trim. Choosing one by the size of the old grille—or by the largest CFM number on the shelf—can miss the real problem.
The number is a starting point. A nominal 80 CFM fan cannot deliver useful ventilation if it is connected to crushed flexible duct, too many tight bends, an obstructed exterior cap, or a duct size the manufacturer does not permit. This guide helps you evaluate both the fan and the complete path to outdoors.

Important: Fan models are sold in standard capacities. If a calculation produces 64 CFM, choose a model with an HVI-certified airflow rating that meets or exceeds the calculated starting point, then confirm its duct and installation requirements.
How to measure your bathroom
Measure the finished interior length and width at floor level, in feet. Multiply the two dimensions to find square footage:
Length × width = bathroom square footage
For an L-shaped room, divide the floor into rectangles, calculate each rectangle, and add the results. Do not use the whole-house square footage or include an enclosed closet that is not served by the fan.
Bathrooms up to 100 square feet
For intermittent ventilation, the calculator follows HVI’s How Much Ventilation Do I Need? guidance: approximately one CFM for each square foot of floor area, with a minimum of 50 CFM for bathrooms smaller than 100 square feet. The minimum matters in small powder rooms: under this calculator’s documented rule, a 30-square-foot room returns 50 CFM. HVI’s separate Bathroom Ventilation example shows 40 CFM for a 40-square-foot room, so local requirements and the selected product’s instructions must still be checked.
A calculated requirement may fall between common model ratings. Treat the result as the minimum starting airflow and look for a certified rating at or above it. Do not assume that a substantially oversized fan will correct poor ducting. More nominal CFM can also bring larger duct requirements, more sound, and replacement-air considerations.
Bathrooms over 100 square feet
For bathrooms larger than 100 square feet, HVI’s fixture-based guidance says to add:
- 50 CFM for each toilet
- 50 CFM for each shower
- 50 CFM for each bathtub
- 100 CFM for each jetted tub
An enclosed toilet room should have its own ventilation according to HVI guidance. Its treatment may also be affected by local requirements, so confirm the design before construction.

Realistic bathroom fan sizing examples
Example 1: 5 × 8 ft. hall bathroom
5 × 8 = 40 sq. ft. One CFM per square foot would be 40, but the HVI minimum recommendation controls. Starting result: 50 CFM.
Example 2: 8 × 10 ft. bathroom
8 × 10 = 80 sq. ft. Starting result: 80 CFM. Confirm that the selected fan’s certified airflow, required duct size, housing dimensions, and installation method fit the project.
Example 3: 12 × 12 ft. primary bathroom
The bathroom is 144 sq. ft., so use fixture allowances. One toilet (50) + one shower (50) + one standard bathtub (50) = 150 CFM.
Example 4: large bathroom with a jetted tub
One toilet (50) + one shower (50) + one jetted tub (100) = 200 CFM. A larger capacity makes duct design, replacement air, sound, housing fit, and electrical requirements especially important.
Advertised airflow versus certified airflow
CFM means cubic feet per minute: the volume of air a fan moves under stated test conditions. A carton may emphasize a nominal capacity, but the more useful comparison is a certified airflow rating tied to a recognized test procedure.
HVI states that its certified airflow rating appears on the product label, in manufacturer literature, or in the HVI-Certified Products Directory. ENERGY STAR’s ventilation-fan criteria also require third-party certification and evaluate airflow, sound, and efficiency. The criteria include installed-performance testing at higher static pressure: qualifying bathroom fans must deliver at least 70% of their 0.1 in. w.g. airflow when tested at 0.25 in. w.g.
How duct diameter, length, bends, and termination affect performance
A fan pushes air through a duct, damper, and exterior termination. Restrictions add resistance—often described as static pressure—and can reduce delivered airflow. ENERGY STAR’s higher-static-pressure performance criterion helps illustrate why installed performance matters; the exact allowable duct layout still comes from the selected fan’s manual.
- Duct diameter: use the diameter and duct type permitted by the selected fan’s manual. Reducing the outlet can increase resistance and noise.
- Length: a longer path creates more resistance than a short direct path.
- Bends: multiple or tight elbows are more restrictive than a gradual, direct route.
- Flexible duct: excess length, compression, sagging, and sharp bends can impede flow.
- Termination: a stuck damper, screen, debris, nest, paint, or restrictive cap can limit exhaust.
- Installation quality: loose joints can leak air; cold, poorly managed duct runs can contribute to condensation.
There is no universal “add 20%” rule in this guide. Equivalent-length and allowable-duct calculations are model- and manufacturer-specific. Follow the selected fan’s installation manual and certified performance information.
Is the fan weak, or should you inspect the duct?
Replacing a fan may help when the motor is failing, the capacity is genuinely inadequate, or a better model can use the existing compatible path. It may not help when the air cannot reach outdoors.
Common installation problems documented in U.S. Department of Energy bathroom-fan installation guidance and manufacturer instructions include poorly supported or restricted flexible duct, sharp bends, leaks, and incorrect termination. Sones and bathroom-fan noise
A sone is a perceived-loudness rating used for residential ventilation products. Lower is quieter. HVI describes approximately 1.0 sone as comparable to a refrigerator and 0.5 sone as rustling leaves; it recommends 1.0 sone or less for quiet bathroom ventilation.

Sound labels are not guarantees of identical noise in every home. Loose mounting, duct turbulence, a restrictive cap, vibration against framing, or a grille that does not seat correctly can make an installation sound worse. Compare ratings made under equivalent conditions.
Continuous versus intermittent ventilation
The calculator applies HVI guidance for intermittent bathroom ventilation—operation during and after moisture-producing use. HVI’s Bathroom Exhaust Fans guidance recommends operating a properly sized fan during bathing and for about 20 minutes afterward. A timer or humidity-sensing control can support that run time.
A bathroom fan may also be designed or configured as part of a continuous whole-house ventilation strategy. Continuous ventilation is not sized by simply applying the bathroom calculator and leaving the fan on. It may be governed by a design standard, local code, building size, bedroom count, controls, commissioning, and a fan’s rated low-speed performance. Confirm the ventilation design with the applicable professional or authority.

Fan placement and venting outdoors
Place the intake where it can capture moisture effectively while complying with the product listing and installation instructions. In many bathrooms this means near the shower or bathing area, but not every fan is listed for every wet-location installation. A separate enclosed toilet room may require its own exhaust.
Replacement air also matters. If the bathroom is tightly sealed, the fan can struggle to pull air into the room. Manufacturer guidance may call for door undercut or another transfer-air path. Placement should encourage air to travel across the room toward the exhaust rather than short-circuiting from the doorway directly into the fan.
The exhaust duct should terminate outdoors—not into an attic, crawlspace, ceiling cavity, or another enclosed area. Electrical and installation safety: when to hire a professional
Call a qualified electrician, HVAC professional, roofer, or appropriately licensed contractor when the work involves:
- New wiring, controls, junction boxes, grounding, or circuit changes
- Uncertain or damaged existing wiring
- Cutting framing or working around hidden utilities
- A new roof, wall, masonry, or exterior-envelope penetration
- Attic access with unsafe temperatures, limited footing, insulation hazards, or suspected asbestos
- Duct redesign, inaccessible crushed duct, condensation, or water entering through the grille
- Mold, persistent building-material damage, or a moisture source not explained by normal bathroom use
- A large-capacity or continuous-ventilation design

Is 50 CFM enough for a bathroom?
Under HVI intermittent-ventilation guidance, 50 CFM is the minimum recommendation for bathrooms up to 100 sq. ft. It is an appropriate starting point for a 50 sq. ft. or smaller bathroom, provided certified airflow, ducting, installation, run time, and local requirements are satisfactory.
Should I choose a 50 CFM or 80 CFM bathroom fan?
For a 40 sq. ft. bathroom, HVI’s starting guidance is 50 CFM. For an 80 sq. ft. bathroom, it is 80 CFM. Do not upgrade solely because 80 is larger: verify the duct diameter, housing fit, sound, certified performance, and manual.
Can a bathroom fan be too powerful?
Oversizing can create more noise, require a different duct, and increase replacement-air demands. It also does not repair a blocked or crushed duct. Select for the room and installation rather than maximizing CFM without context.
What duct size does a bathroom fan need?
Use the size and duct configuration specified in the exact fan’s installation manual. Four-inch and six-inch round connections are common, but common does not mean interchangeable. Do not reduce the outlet unless the manufacturer explicitly permits the configuration.
How long should the fan run after a shower?
